Diddle Rudiments are one of the four categories of drum rudiments sanctioned by the International P.A.S. The remaining three categories include: Rolls, Flams and Drags. Although the Diddle Rudiment category consist of four distinct rudiments, they all have common characteristics with one another. Learning these common characteristics will make learning Diddle Rudiments easier to learn and master, as well as enhancing the ability to use Diddle Rudiments in fills, and solos.
Diddle Rudiments are always evenly-spaced notes of alternate (right, left) sticking. And each rudiment in the Diddle category is based on a paradiddle and ‘diddle,’ meaning double. A key device to enhancing the playability of Diddle Rudiments is learning how to ‘diddle’ or double stroke a single drum hit. The drum rudiments in the Diddle Rudiments category include:
Roll Rudiments / Diddle Rudiments / Flam Rudiments / Drag Rudiments
