Drum Warm Up Tips

There is an element of athleticism to playing the drums. So prepare for a gig much in the same way that athletes prepare for a game -warm up. Developing good habits early is essential to becoming a top performer.

1. Use the muscles in the same way when playing the drums.

The best way to warm up before play is to use muscle groups much the same way as playing. Sit behind the drum set and begin drum warm ups by playing simple beats and fills, easing into the movements. Of course do this warming up behind the stage, before the gig or practice. The audience should only hear the music – not the warm up. If the kit is unavailable,  use the practice pad to get your arms moving.

Remember: the sole purpose to warming up is to get the blood flowing into the same muscles used while playing or performance. Caution: playing too fast too soon, may cause tension, restricting blood flow causing injury. Start out slowly and play relaxed, use simple strokes and gradually increase the tempo and complexity. Simple exercises and stretching of the hands, arms and feet is also beneficial. Prepare for playing, but save energy for the performance!

2. Prepare a mental attitude.

Information on warming up often misses the mental aspects to warming up. Take time to ‘visualize’ the performance before playing. Mentally play the music.

Really get into the music you are playing, enjoy the moment. This simple visualization will pay off and improve the groove. Properly prepared, having a great gig transforms the band and the audience.

Drummer’s don’t get the opportunity to run around the stage the way guitarists and singers do. Pretty much stuck on the stage in one spot, and it can be difficult to ‘shine on the stage.’ A mental attitude will convey energy. Warming up before practice or a gig will convey tremendous energy and confidence. This energy is infectious to those around you.

Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. Unprepared mentally and physically will have adverse effects – not only on performance but likewise the band will suffer.
